The Canyon Retreat | Recent Catio Build in Lowden Washington

📍Location📍

Lowden, WA

Project Overview

This custom catio was thoughtfully designed to provide four beloved cats in Lowden, WA with a spacious, secure outdoor retreat they could access freely from their home. Measuring 10 feet wide by 8 feet deep and 8 feet tall, the freestanding structure was built to offer ample room for exploration while ensuring long-term durability against Washington’s ever-changing weather. The goal was to create a safe, enriching environment where the cats could experience the outdoors without compromising comfort or structural integrity.

Constructed with pressure-treated lumber, 1×1 black PVC-coated critter fencing, and topped with a classic ribbed steel metal roof, the catio was built to withstand moisture, wind, and seasonal elements. A short tunnel connects directly from the house wall through a cat door, allowing seamless access while keeping the main structure fully freestanding. Inside, shelves, ramps, and a cedar scratch post provide vertical enrichment, encouraging climbing, perching, and natural feline behaviors—all within a secure and thoughtfully crafted space.

Feature List

  • Climbing Shelves (Expanded Layout)
Multiple shelves installed at varied heights throughout the 10’ x 8’ enclosure allow cats to leap, perch, and observe their surroundings. Additional shelves were incorporated to increase vertical pathways and maximize usable wall space for full-body movement and enrichment.
  • Ramps
Slanted ramps connect shelf levels, creating smooth transitions between elevations and making vertical movement accessible and engaging for cats of all activity levels.
  • Cedar Scratch Post
A built-in cedar scratch post encourages natural scratching behavior, supporting claw health while providing a dedicated outlet for instinctive activity within the enclosure.
  • Human Access Door
A custom-built door allows owners to comfortably enter the catio, making it easy to spend time inside, interact with their cats, and maintain the space as needed.

Feature Purpose & Pet Personality Fit

This custom catio was thoughtfully designed around the unique personalities and energy levels of four beloved cats. With three young, energetic cats who love late-night zoomies, climbing high cabinets, and perching above the action—and one senior cat who prefers peaceful lounging—the layout balances high-energy vertical movement with comfortable resting zones. The result is a shared outdoor space that supports every stage of life and personality type.

  • The generous 10’ x 8’ x 8’ footprint provides ample room for bursts of energy, giving the three younger cats space to run, leap, and safely channel their nighttime zoomies.
  • Elevated shelves were intentionally installed at higher levels to mimic their natural habit of climbing cabinets and seeking high vantage points, satisfying their instinct to observe from above.
  • Integrated ramps create accessible vertical pathways, allowing energetic climbers to move fluidly between levels while also supporting safer navigation for the senior cat.
  • The cedar scratch post offers a dedicated outlet for scratching and stretching, supporting active play while protecting the structure.
  • Lower, open lounging areas within the enclosure provide the senior cat with a calm, comfortable space to relax outdoors without needing to climb.
  • The fully freestanding, spacious design ensures all four cats can share the enclosure comfortably—whether they’re sprinting, perching, or peacefully soaking in the fresh air.
