This custom deck-mounted catio and tunnel system was crafted for a mountain home exposed to frequent snow, strong winds, and abundant wildlife. The client wanted to provide a safe outdoor experience for their cats without obstructing the scenic deck view. Built from stained cedar to match the home’s existing finish, the structure includes a 9′ × 5′6″ × 8′ catio and a 15′ tunnel that doubles as a bench. The team prioritized durability, clean design, and multi-point access for both cats and humans—resulting in a versatile and subtle integration with the property’s outdoor space.

Build Specifications

This build was designed for functionality, visibility, and year-round safety in a snowy, high-wind environment. Constructed directly onto an elevated deck, it delivers an immersive outdoor experience for the cats while maintaining the home’s view and aesthetic continuity.

Dimensions & Layout

  • Main Catio Structure: Approximately 9 feet wide × 5 feet 6 inches deep × up to 8 feet tall. Built in a freestanding format with a lean-to metal roof and no floor, allowing direct integration with the deck surface. A human-sized access door was added on the side near the gutter.
  • Tunnel System: A 15-foot tunnel, framed with 2×4s and topped with 2×6 bench-style slats, serves dual purposes: cat transit and human seating. It spans 18 inches wide by 18 inches tall and includes four access doors for human entry and cleaning.
  • Connection Points:
    • Tunnel sits flush on the deck, requiring no added flooring
    • Cat tunnel links directly to the catio entry point
    • Designed to preserve deck visibility with a low-profile layout

    • Ideal for harsh climates with snow and wind exposure
    • Visually aligns with the existing deck stain, which was matched exactly at the client’s request

Roofing: Ribbed Steel Metal

  • Classic Ribbed Steel Metal Roofing
    • Highly resistant to moisture and snow accumulation
    • Durable against mountain weather and high winds
    • Ensures longevity while requiring minimal maintenance

Fencing: 2×2 Black Critterfencing

  • Material: Galvanized steel core with protective black coating
  • Mesh Size: 2×2 inch square openings
  • Why This Fencing?
    • Prevents predator intrusion while keeping cats securely inside
    • Strong enough to deter wildlife like bobcats, bears, and mountain lions
    • Allows for airflow and visibility
    • Dark mesh blends with natural shadows for minimal visual obstruction

Interior Features & Enrichment

This catio was designed to provide stimulation and movement while respecting the home’s deck layout and mountain environment. Its interior layout offers opportunities for vertical play, lounging, and secure roaming—all while keeping the cats protected from surrounding wildlife.

Feature List

  • Climbing Shelves
    Cedar climbing shelves installed along the catio walls at varied heights allow cats to leap, perch, and explore vertically. Their staggered placement supports full-body movement and climbing.
  • Ramps
    Slanted cedar ramps connect different shelf levels within the catio, making it easier for cats to traverse between heights—even in colder or snow-prone conditions.
  • Perches
    Built-in resting platforms offer both shaded and sunlit spots for lounging. Elevated views give cats a safe vantage point to observe their environment.
  • Tunnel Enclosure with Bench Top
    The 15-foot tunnel doubles as a bench for the homeowner while acting as a secure passageway for feline exploration. Slats on top add utility without compromising ventilation or visibility.
  • Corner Hideaway Shelf
    A tucked-away shelf under the ramp acts as a natural retreat for cats who need a break from play or stimulation.

Note: No hammocks or plants were incorporated into this build due to weather exposure and local wildlife activity.
