Designed for a household of six beloved cats—four senior cats and two younger ones—the goal was to create a safe, enriching, and luxurious outdoor space that catered to every feline personality and age group. Tailored Space for Six Cats
Roofing:
One of the standout features of this San Diego catio is its clear polycarbonate roof. The client wanted a covered space to protect their cats from the elements but was particularly drawn to the idea of a clear roof. This choice allows an abundance of natural light to flood the enclosure, creating a bright and airy environment while providing full weather protection. Whether it’s a sunny California day or a rare drizzle, the cats can enjoy the outdoors comfortably year-round.
Interior Design:
The structure’s foundation is made from pressure-treated lumber, ensuring durability and longevity against the elements. This robust material not only guarantees safety but also adds to the aesthetic appeal of the build. The flooring features a deck-style design, providing a natural yet resilient surface that seamlessly blends with the outdoor setting. For safety, critter fencing surrounds the entire catio, keeping out unwanted animals while giving the cats the freedom to explore.
A Paradise for Cats of All Ages
Creating a space that accommodates both senior and younger cats required meticulous planning. Each element of the catio was designed to cater to their unique needs and preferences:
Shelves & Cubbies:
Elevated spaces are a must for cats who love to climb and observe. This catio features wrap-around shelves on the top level, providing the cats with an elevated perch to enjoy the view. Additionally, four custom cubbies were installed, each offering a cozy resting spot. These cubbies are perfect for the older cats to retreat and relax in comfort.Ramps & Scratch Posts:
Accessibility is key, especially for the senior cats. The catio includes four to five ramps, ensuring easy navigation between levels. Meanwhile, two floor-to-ceiling scratch posts encourage exercise and satisfy the cats’ natural scratching instincts, keeping them physically active and mentally stimulated.Hammocks:
What’s a luxury catio without lounging options? This project comes with one complimentary hammock, with the client opting to add two additional hammocks. These handwoven hanging beds are not only functional but also add a touch of elegance to the overall design, offering the perfect spots for lounging in style.
Bringing Nature Inside
The client expressed a love for incorporating natural elements into the design. Inspired by this, we added tree-like features and strategically placed shelves to emulate a natural climbing environment. These elements create a stimulating space for the younger cats while maintaining a peaceful retreat for the older ones. The harmonious blend of nature-inspired features and modern design ensures that every cat—from the playful kitten to the relaxed senior—feels at home.
